When the dishwasher at home stopped working, closely followed by the door of the kitchen cupboard falling off, I started to suspect that something was up.
But when my coffee machine suddenly started billowing smoke followed by the car mechanic telling me I needed $6000 work on my car I knew that this was not normal and that I was traveling through a localized increase in entropy in the space time continuum (AKA entropic cloud).
While I have not found any research in the phenomena I have decided to name as Localized Increase in Entropy in Space/Time Continuum (LIIEST) or alternatively Entropic Cloud, confirmation of its existence can been seen in folk law in the saying "these things happen in threes". History also has many examples of individuals or groups just getting more than their fair share of things going wrong.
My hypothesis is that entropy, defined as:
- a measure of the unavailability of a system’s energy to do work; also a measure of disorder; the higher the entropy the greater the disorder.

in accordance with thermodynamics, will be measured at different levels at different places at different times. Fluctuations in the level of entropy can occur in a localized groupings causing a perceived increase in disorder. As such the individual's experience will be that things will breakdown more frequently or in other words a there will be an increase in bad luck.
The hypothesis implies the existence of anti entropy and the ability to create a a quantified measure of luck. Other interesting ideas are the possibility of entropic weather reports and why is it that some individuals seem to have seem to have an arbitrarily high or low level of entropy associated with their existence in space/time.
But I've not yet had time to think about these as I have to organize the dishwasher repair person and someone to repair the door to the kitchen cupboard and I've not had coffee yet.
